An E-mail interview between PARK Seong Jun and HAN Heng-Gil on Dec 6, 2018

HAN: Can you please briefly explain how your video was made?

PARK: I am mostly interested in spaces we live in. Recently, I became curious about human traces in natural environments. On an early morning I discovered a sign that clearly shows the confrontation between North and South Korea at the beautiful beach on Daecheong Island. Recognizing the sign’s function and contexts, I had very mixed feelings. As intense as my feelings were, I was led by a strong curiosity to take a video of the sign.

HAN: What did you film?

PARK: I would say nature, humans, ideology, confrontation, North and South, conflict, etc.

HAN: What do you anticipate your audience will get from your video?

PARK: For a South Korean, it feels very risky to think about lifting up the phone and trying to make a call [to find out whether or not the phone really works], in this space of confrontation between North and South Korea. For a North Korean, it would be a really hard decision to pick up the phone and call.
A playful act for a person on one side is a fateful act for another person on the other side. These different sides can be seen as contradictory. The hand that appears in the video can be imagined as the hand of a South Korean or that of a North Korean. Imagining this makes us feel powerless before absolute entities such as the state, ideology, and ideals. Through this video, I intended to express the complex situation, a conundrum that is unlikely to be solved.

HAN: Do you have any plans to further develop the video? Or do you think about possibly going back to Daecheong or Baekryeong Islands to do additional research?

PARK: I think so. Because they are islands. If we try to cross the border on the peninsula, there will be many obstacles and fences. But because the islands are surrounded by sea, it is easier to experience the border between North and South Korea than on land. I anticipate occasional discoveries of objects that have drifted over from North Korea; a lot of floating garbage comes to our coast by sea.

HAN: If the project helped you to expand your view of art or your art world, in what way did it?

PARK: The creative direction of an artist changes who the artist meets. The natural environment, different from a big city, and meeting people who live on the islands provided a special experience, and I have to say that the project has provided a time beneficial for making art.
