이자운 (대한민국 생. 미합중국 거주 및 활동)

뉴욕에서 활동하는 이자운은 회화, 판화, 콜라지, 설치 등 다양한 쟝르와 매체를 사용하는 미술가이다. 최근 <레고-구름> 시리즈에서 작가는 임의적인 공식을 통하여 레고 모양으로 도려낸 형상을 구성한다. 인식론과 언어학을 시각적으로 구사하면서 작가는 인간이 어떻게 불완전하고 완벽하지 못한 논리와, 생각, 인위적으로 구조된 요소들을 통해서만 지각하는지를 반영한다. 최종적인 화면 구성은 고전적인 비디오 게임에서 볼 수 있는 비트맵 구름 같은 형상을 모방한다. 그 결과 작가의 화면은 건축, 도시풍경, 지형 위상학 등을 연상시킨다.

이자운은 서울대학교 미술대학에서 수학했고, 알프레드 대학에서 철학과를 쿰라우데의 우수한 성적으로 졸업했다. 그의 최근 전시는 뉴욕 유엔교회센터, 뉴욕 크로싱 콜렉티브 갤러리, 서울 숨도예술공간, 베를린 라이트 하우스 갤러리 등에서 발표되었다. 그의 전시는 뉴욕타임즈, 블륵클린 레일, 아트 크리티컬 등에서 비평을 받았다.

작가 노트
나는 회화를 제작할 때 철학에서 배운 논리적인 방법을 사용한다. 나는 내 나름대로의 형식적인 언어법을 규정하고 회화 작업을 할 때 그 규칙에 따른다. 그 결과는 내가 나 스스로 내린 절제의 규칙에 따르면서 선택한 결정들을 기록하는 구성이다.

Zaun LEE (b ROK. Lives and works in USA.)

Zaun Lee is an interdisciplinary artist, working in painting, printmaking, collage, and installation, based in New York City. In her recent Lego-Cloud series, she composes cutouts of Lego drawings by arbitrary formulas. Visually playing epistemology and linguistics, her process mirrors how humans can only perceive through layers of logic, thought, and constructed elements, which are imperfect and incomplete. The final compositions emulate formations of the bitmap clouds in classic video games, connoting architecture, cityscape, and topology.
Lee studied at College of Fine Arts, Seoul National University and graduated Cum Laude in Philosophy from Alfred University. Her recent exhibitions include The Church Center of the United Nations, New York; Crossing Collective Gallery of New York; Soomdo Art Space, Seoul, Korea; and Lite-Haus Galerie, Berlin, Germany. They have been also featured in The New York Times, The Brooklyn Rail, Art Critical, and others.

Artist Statement
I apply a logical methodology to the practice of painting, informed by my background in philosophy. I have defined a set of formal rules that I follow during my painting process when drawing Lego blocks . The resulting compositions record the choices I make as I follow my self-imposed set of restrictions.
