몇년간 계속 하고 있는 <철책망 시리즈> 는 판화와 비디오 설치, 애니메이션 시리즈 등 다양한 미디어로 구성되었다. 철책망 시리즈는 나의 고향에 있는 미군부대기지의 철책망 이미지를 바탕으로 제작되었다. 최근의 미국과 북한 사이의 정치적 갈등으로 불어나는 위협에도 불구하고, 끝이 안보이는 그 철책망의 휘여지고 꼬여진 형태는 마치 라인 드로잉처럼 미적으로 아름답고 끊임없이 반복된다. 아이들이 재미있게 실놀이를 하면서 꼬인 실을 풀듯이, 꼬여진 철책망의 긴장을 평화롭게 푸는 방법이 있으리라 믿는다.

이가경은 홍익대와 동 대학원에서 판화를 전공한 후 뉴욕 주립대 퍼체이스 칼리지 대학원에서 스튜디오 아트를 공부했다. 국내에서 일러스트레이터로 활동한 바 있으며 현재 한국과 뉴욕을 오가면서 판화, 비디오, 설치 작업을 주로 하고있다. 메트로 폴리탄 미술관, 뮤지움 오브 모던 아트 (MOMA), 퀸스 미술관, 매사추세츠 현대 미술관 (MASS MOCA), 함부르크 현대 미술관, 브레멘 미술관 등 한국과 뉴욕, 독일에서 수십차례 개인전과 그룹전을 가졌다. 오마이 (Omi), ISCP, 뉴욕 자메이카 학예술센터, 메리월시 샵 파운데이션, 맥도웰, 야도 레지던시 프로그램에 참여해왔으며, 미국 폴록 크레이스너상, 뉴욕 파운데이션 오브 더 아트 펠로우십, 뉴욕 알재단 작가상, 카파 작가상 (Korea Arts Foundation of America, LA), 아메리칸 아카데미상 등을 수상했다. 아시아 소사이어티, 뉴욕 메트로폴리탄 미술관, 국회의사당 도서관, 오하이오 클리블렌드 미술관, 텍사스 맥레이 미술관 등에 작품이 소장되어있다.

Kakyoung LEE (b. ROK. Lives and works in USA)

This Barbed Wire Series is a series of prints and multi-channel moving image installations. It is based on the shape of the barbed wire at the US army base in my hometown. Despite the growing threats between the United States and North Korea, the shapes of the tangled and distorted barbed wire are aesthetically repetitive and beautiful as abstract line drawings. And I hope there is a way to peacefully loosen the tangled tension as if it were like children playing cat’s cradle.
Kakyoung Lee (b. 1975, Korea) received her BFA and MFA from Hong-Ik University, as well as an MFA from SUNY-Purchase College, NY. She has exhibited in numerous exhibitions internationally, including at the Drawing Center, New York; Hofstra University, Hempstead; Kunsthalle Bremen, DE; Mass MOCA, North Adams; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Museum of Contemporary Art, Banja Luka, Bosnia; Museum Folkwang, Essen, DE; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Oqbo, Berlin, DE; Queens Museum, New York; and Seoul Arts Center, Korea. She has held residencies at Omi, ISCP, Jamaica Center for Arts and Learning, Marie Walsh Sharp Foundation, MacDowell Colony, and Yaddo. She has received the Pollock-Krasner Foundation grant, NYFA Fellowship, the Ahl Foundation grant, and KAFA award. She was the 2017 recipient of the American Academy of Arts and Letter Purchase Award. Lee’s works are in the collections of Asia Society, New York; McNay Art Museum, TX; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Cleveland Museum of Art, Ohio; and Library of Congress, Washington D.C. among others.
