JU Tae-Seok

(ROK)

JU Tae-Seok (b. 1955, lives and works in ROK)

Nature/Image by Tae-Seok Ju symbolically represents the relationship between humans and nature. Simplified forms of trees and branches, as well as the shadows they draw, allude to the lonely life of contemporary man. The artist, who used to create hyper-realistic canvases, has gradually changed his painting style over the last decade. He now produces a pictorial plane that is flattened by omitting the details and colors of a natural landscape. The artist seriously examines basic visual vocabularies of repetition and miniscule/gradual changes.

For the subject matter of this particular painting, the artist takes a tree that has grown into a couple of strong trunks to keep the balance of gravity. He then uses the shadow of the trunks to create a composition of repeating patterns. Balance and harmony, reflection and refraction are some of the ideas that the artist addresses in this painting. Through an emblematic composition, the painting communicates an atmosphere that suggests how the Korea division feels in reality, allusively pointing to the collective urge of Korean people for surmounting the division.
