카레이로 조엘 (미합중국)

조엘 카레이로는 열을 이용하여 이미지를 전사하는 기법을 사용한다. 그는 유럽의 전통적인 화집 그림을 종이나 캔버스에 열을 이용하여 전사한다. 유럽의 그림을 잘라 그 이미지를 전사함으로써 작가는 유럽의 단일 시점 원근법 전통을 동시대 시각언어인 격자형 구조로 재해석한다. 후기근대주의의 어휘들을 (예를 들면 차용, 혼성모방, 짜집기) 사용하여 카레이로의 작업은 북한에서는 보기 힘든 작업 기법이고 그 점에서 미국 문화와 북한 문화의 차이를 제시한다. 그러나 카레이로가 중국과 북한 미술 작가들과 공유하는 점이 있다. 그 것은 문화정체성을 고심하고 찾는 노력이고 전통의 재생 혹은 현대화이다. 그로써 동시대미술의 큰 부분은 불확실성과 정체성의 질문과의 씨름하는 활동이라는 것이 재확인된다.

Joel CARREIRO (USA)

Joel Carreiro employs a heat transfer technique to create his work. He takes printed images of European paintings and uses heat to transfer these images onto a sheet of paper or canvas. Dissecting the images, his work reinterprets Western traditions in contemporary terms of the grid structure. By employing postmodernist art-making strategies — such as appropriation, pastiche, and patchwork — Carreiro’s work creates a quality of art that can be rarely seen in North Korea, presenting a difference between America and North Korea. However, Carreiro is similar to Chinese and North Korean artists in the search for his own cultural identity, confirming the view that a big part of contemporary art is to raise questions about uncertainty and identity.
