최창호 (조선민주주의인민공화국)

최창호는 1960년 온성 태생이고 평양에 있는 만수대창작사 조선화부 부장이다. 그는 형상의 외곽선을 그리지 않고 먹과 색, 농도로만 직접 형상을 구사하는 몰골법의 거장으로 유명하다. 그의 역동적인 화면은 에너지로 가득차 있다. 이 시각적인 힘에 대하여 미국인들은 가끔 진정으로 예술적인 숭고함 보다는 기실은 허상인 장경의 창조로 비판을 받는다. 그러나 기술이 뛰어난 그의 회화는 관객에게 경의의 감각을 불러일킨다는 점은 확실하다. 그 경의의 감각이 숭고하던 말던 상관없이.

Chang Ho CHOI (DPRK)

Chang-ho Choi, born in Onseong, North Korea in 1960, is the Head of the Chosunhwa Studio at the Mansudae Creative Studio in Pyongyang. He is renowned for being a great master of “Mol Gol” technique in which figures are shaped immediately by the application of different colors and ink saturation without outlining the shapes before coloring. His dynamic paintings are full of energy. This has provoked occasional criticism from American viewers that his work is a spectacle instead of producing a feeling of the sublime. However, it is certain that his skilful painting produces a sense of awe whether or not this sense of awe is sublime.
